Deciding what plumbing company you’re going to call before a disaster happens is the smart thing to do. You don’t want to wait until you have water in your basement to try to find the best plumber. Yet so many plumbing companies claim to have the experience and skills to handle any emergency, but how do you know if it’s true? Well, here’s a guide on what to look for when choosing plumbing service.

Do they have a license?

The plumber you choose should have a state license if your state requires it. So check with the plumbing companies you’re interested in to see if they only hire licensed plumbers. Also if your state does require licensing, then sub-contractors and journeymen as well as the plumbers are required to be licensed if they do work for that company. Therefore, if the plumbing company or individual plumber doesn’t have a license, or uses unlicensed subcontractors, then don’t hire them to do your plumbing.

Does the company have the proper insurance and is it bonded?

Before hiring a plumbing company, check to see if the company has general liability and workman’s compensation insurance. You want to make sure that if there’s an injury on the job, or if there’s an accident, the company has insurance to cover it for your own protection. In addition, a plumbing contractor who is bonded will cover any claims a manager or property owner may file against that plumbing contractor.

What is their level of experience?

If the plumbing company has been around for say 15 years or so, then the company is usually a good one to call. Another thing to check on is how long the company has been located at its present address. You want to make sure you can get a hold of the people if there is a warranty issue so stability is important. They can move if it is well advertised because businesses do expand, but if the company has repeatedly moved then that is a problem.

Another thing, if commercial plumbing is what you’re looking for, make sure that the company you’re considering handles that type of plumbing. The plumbing in a commercial building is more complex than in a residential home, so the plumbing company has to have the expertise to handle this type of plumbing issue. One call may turn into a total plumbing replacement in commercial plumbing because of the size and scope of commercial properties so you want someone who has this kind of experience when considering a plumbing company.

What type of plumbing services would you need?

The full range of plumbing services offered to cover all your plumbing needs would include the following;

  • Faucet and fixture repair: Facets and fixtures cause property owner’s problems from leaking, or flooding onto floors and into cabinets; to making odd noises, to jerking when turned on. A plumbing expert can figure out what the exact problem is and repair the problem.
  • Bathroom and kitchen plumbing installation: Kitchen sinks, bathtubs, bathroom sinks, showers; toilets and other bathroom and kitchen plumbing fixtures need to be installed in a professional way. A shoddy bathroom installation reflects badly on your house or business when you have guests, tenants or customers so this is important.
  • Outdoor Spigot Service and Repair: When a spigot bursts, leaks or stops working for one reason or another, you want a qualified plumber to do this kind of work because you don’t want a badly done plumbing job seeping water into your residence or commercial building’s foundation.
  • Frozen pipe repair: Fixing a frozen pipe or pipes can be a costly job if done improperly. Be sure to check then to see if this is a repair that the company can handle.
  • Sump pump service and repair: When a sump pump starts to hum because it’s failing or doesn’t work at all, you need a quality plumber to check it out, or you will have a flooding problem.
  • Emergency plumbing: You want a plumbing company that is open every day and can be reached nights, holidays and weekends. For emergency plumbing problems, a quick answer is a necessity.

Always check the customer reviews

You check the reviews for something you’re thinking about purchasing; why not for the plumbing company you’re considering? Customer reviews tell you a lot about the company. So if the majority of reviews are either good or bad, weigh them into your decision. By reading the reviews, you can add them to the picture about the reputation of the company that you’re forming. You can also ask for references.

Choosing a reputable plumbing company before an emergency will bring you peace of mind.
